North Hampton School

Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 9/10

Dear NHS Community,

Don’t forget that Wednesday, Sept. 11th is our first early release day of the year. Students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served.

Parent Driver Practice Change

In the past, NHS has utilized parent drivers for certain field trip opportunities. We are not able to continue this practice. We are committed to continuing to provide high quality field trip/learning opportunities for our students. We do not anticipate that this new practice will negatively affect our ability to continue to take field trips, as they are highly valued at NHS and are related to our curriculum. There are other forms of transportation available to us. We have always appreciated parent support of school initiatives and trips and thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Note from Chief Mone

One of the goals of the North Hampton Police Department is to create and continue positive relationships between students and police officers. In an effort for the students at North Hampton School to view law enforcement as a beneficial resource, Principal Snyder and her staff are inviting officers to join in school activities.  Whether it be a police officer reading a book to an elementary student in the classroom or an officer's presence on the playground or cafeteria, officers being integrated into schools, in a friendly, supportive role allow for positive rapport to be built. A safe school environment is conducive to student learning and the North Hampton Police Department looks forward to continuing with this community collaboration.

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas please contact me at kmone@northhampton-nh.gov<mailto:kmone@northhampton-nh.gov> or 603-964-2198

Sincerely,

Kathryn Mone

Chief of Police

North Hampton Police Department

Curriculum Night

Our Curriculum Night will take place on September 18th between the hours of 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. This is an evening for parents and guardians to learn about grade level expectations and curriculum. Teachers will give presentations in their classrooms during the first block and then repeat the same presentation during the second block for parents who have multiple children at NHS. Unified Arts/Specialist teachers will have tables set up in the Cafeteria so parents may stop by and learn about those areas of our curriculum. There will be a presentation by the NHS Leadership Team in the Cafeteria at 6:45.

5:30-6:10 Classroom Presentations

6:15-6:45 Presentation by Leadership Team/ Visit Tables

6:50-7:30 Classroom Presentations

Children should not attend this evening event.  The Winnacunnet Girls’ Soccer Team will offer childcare in our gym as a fundraiser for the team. Suggested donation is $20 per child with a $30 maximum per family. Childcare will be available for children in grades K-5 only. We are not able to accommodate younger siblings.

Operation Kid Sight

Nurse Mara is organizing parent permission for the vision screening event on Sept. 27th. If you mistakenly returned the purple ‘opt out’ form thinking it was a permission form, please let her know. In the future, we will be sure to label ‘opt out’ forms more clearly. We apologize for the confusion.

Grade 6 Field Trips

The 6th grade will take 3 trips this year to the Browne Center at UNH on 9/4/19, 1/15/20, and 6/3/20. The focus is on team building and community building through activity and adventure. Goals for the series of trips include building competencies in the following areas:

  • Building skills in collective leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and conflict resolution.

  • Understanding how effective communication and peer support can enhance group decision-making, the development of trust, and positive risk-taking.

  • Creating an atmosphere of acceptance and community.

  • Welcoming and integrating new students.

  • Offering opportunities for students to take positive risks.

  • Strengthening relationships between staff and students.

  • Deepening student’s awareness around accountability and responsibility.

  • Developing skills needed to be able to resolve team conflicts.

This focus on social emotional learning, leadership, communication, and the building of trusting relationships is essential. Our staff are committed to supporting the learning back in the classroom and feel these shared experiences will strengthen students’ abilities to be caring, empathetic members of the NHS school community.
