Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 1/8

Dear NHS Community,

Happy New Year 2020! A new year always brings thoughts of goals and ideas. If this one isn’t on your list, please consider making 2020 a year in which you see your child LOVE to read. Often this happens when kids feel success in their reading or when they find a book that truly speaks to them. It also happens when they see people they admire read for fun. That could be a friend, a sibling, or a parent or grandparent who shows through actions that they LOVE to read books themselves and that they LOVE to read books with kids. Our Literacy Interventionist teacher Amanda Wiernicki shared the article below. Have a look and check out the titles by age range on the right as well. It is always fun to hear about new books. These lists are from 2019 and it sure looks like there is something for everyone.

We welcome Leah Crohn back to NHS! Leah was on maternity leave for the first part of the school year. We also thank Ruth Welsford for filling in for Leah in her absence and doing a great job in kindergarten!

Dismissal Plan Reminders

Please be sure to update any changes to your child’s dismissal plans in Pick Up Patrol each day. Our office uses Pick Up Patrol to ensure students are dismissed according to their family plans. Recreation Dept. leader, Joe Manzi, uses Pick Up Patrol to double check the roster each day. In the unlikely event that his list conflicts with Pick Up Patrol, he uses Pick Up Patrol as the most recent information. NHS uses First Student for bus service. We have a procedure in place so that any Kindergarten, First, or Second Grade student who mistakenly takes the bus home or whose parent is not there at the stop will be brought back to North Hampton School.

Please see two attached flyers. One is for the school Spelling Bee and the other is for a PAL sponsored event in January.

Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences

We will be scheduling Parent-Teacher Conferences during the week of Feb. 3, 2020. We will be offering extended hours on Wednesday, Feb. 5th. This is an early release day so conferences will be available beginning at 12:45 that day. Your child’s teacher will contact you to schedule a time.

Reflection

Take a look at the bulletin board outside Ms. Vas’ room. It’s a great reminder for our students to be confident, self reliant, and to take initiative.

Partnership with North Hampton Police Department

Officer Pops will be back at NHS on Wednesdays beginning in January. He will be teaching lessons in LEAD (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) for 6th graders. LEAD is the updated version of the old DARE curriculum. (Sixth grade parents should look for a letter to come home soon.) Additionally, he will be in the building for much of the day to interact with students at lunch and recess and help out at drop off and dismissal times. On the days Officer Poppalardo is with us at NHS, he's here for community outreach, to be a visual and welcoming presence, to forge positive relationships and to help with youth development and empowerment; as another positive adult connection. Chris is a great guest reader and you may hear from your child that he has read a story in class. He will likely be here on Mondays as well.

Spring Musical

Please see the website that Mrs. Zavez has created for information about the Middle School Spring Musical, “The Little Mermaid.”

Kindergarten Registration

It’s already time to think about kindergarten registration for the 2020-2021 school year. We are busy putting together information for incoming parents and families. Kelly Ford has drafted a press announcement that will go to local newspapers this month. We hope to connect with families and provide the registration information during the month of February. We will have our Kindergarten Registration and Parent Information Night on March 12 from 6:00-7:00 PM. Kelly will be there to collect forms and the teachers will be presenting information about school experiences at NHS. We will have an orientation day for students on June 5. Students will come by appointment to see the school, meet the teachers, and take a tour. We look forward to welcoming the next group of NHS kindergartners!
