Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 4/10

Dear NHS Families--April 10, 2020

We hope you are well. This week, I thought I’d share a short video with ‘7 Tips for Parents Supporting Remote Learning’ with Larry Ferlazzo. It came from “Education Week” magazine. If you don’t have time for the video, here are the 7 tips:

Model how to face crisis and adversity with courage and compassion.

Help your child maintain a schedule.

Dedicate space in your home for schoolwork.

Ask your children about their learning.

Read with your children.

Tell family stories.

Encourage children to write about what they are going through.

This is an unprecedented time for parents and children. Using it as a way to support resiliency, maintain connections creatively, and document the experience in writing can be both helpful and memorable. The video is about 5 minutes long: http://blogs.edweek.org/teachers/classroom_qa_with_larry_ferlazzo/2020/04/video_7_tips_for_parents_supporting_remote_learning.html

UA Expectations

It is our hope that UA classes provide a needed balance with screen time and provide students an opportunity to engage in learning activities that get them moving, inspire creativity and expression, and relax a bit. To clarify, we hope that students will participate in one UA per day (ie. art, music, PE, etc). If this is not possible, Fridays are a good time to ‘catch up’ with UA’s. Students would then participate in each of their UA classes once in a week.

Google Classroom Communication

Classroom teachers in Grade 1 and Grades 3-8 are using Google Classroom. UA teachers have also set up Google Classrooms for students. We had previously sent home codes for all the UA Google Classrooms, but recognize that this may have been confusing or time consuming for students and parents to keep track of all the different Google Classrooms. In an attempt to streamline communication to parents, teachers will be inviting parents to join Google Classrooms as “Guardians.”

Once families accept the teacher's invitation, all the summary information for the classes that use Google Classroom will come in a single email.  They will receive regular, automatic email summaries for each of their students and can choose the frequency of the emails—daily or weekly—and can unsubscribe at any time.

This is not intended to replace current communications from teachers, but rather to offer a single, streamlined Google Classroom summary for families.   Most, if not all, teachers will have sent out the guardian email invites by the end of the weekend.  Not all teachers use Google Classroom.

Guardian email summaries include:

Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent (This will only appear for those assignments that include a due date.)

Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails) (This will only appear for those assignments that include a due date.)

Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers

We hope you find this feature useful. If you have specific questions about assignments or work, please contact the teacher.

Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 2 teachers are using the SeeSaw platform for communication.

We miss seeing your children every day! Stay well.

Susan
