Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 9/21

Dear NHS Community,

With our NHS family spread in three learning environments, it’s nice to spread the word about positive things we see in all formats. You will see this note divided into news from RLA(Remote Learning Academy K-5), EVL (Enriched Virtual Learning 6-8), and in-person (PK-5) NHS instruction.

Health Form

In news for all, we are attaching a form that our school nurse needs for all students. We had attempted to use Powerschool to gather this information but found that it did not meet our needs. Therefore, we are sending the paper form and asking that you return it to Nurse Mara either by printing it, filling it in, and sending to school with your child or by mailing it to 201 Atlantic Ave. We do need the information for all students as EVL students have visited the school and may be in for events or activities. For RLA students, we would still like to collect the information not knowing when we will all be back in school at some point in the future.

RLA

Students enrolled in SAU 21’s RLA have begun classes and received some materials. It is my understanding that there will be additional materials pick up from time to time. RLA students have a homeroom teacher for all core instruction. RLA students who have IEP’s receive their services from NHS special education staff. We are pleased to partner with RLA in providing UA opportunities from the NHS teachers. RLA teachers post choice boards for each UA class, ie. Art, Music, etc. and students can choose activities to complete. Feel free to send our UA teachers photos or student work from UA classes.

EVL

Enriched Virtual Learning in our Middle School is following a rigorous schedule with synchronous instruction for four core classes and a UA class each day. Classes are 40 minutes long and students have told us they are glad to be back in school. Parents have told us that their students find this year’s format to be engaging for their children. Grades 7 & 8 have held Student Government elections, complete with speeches and voting in a virtual environment. Students in grades 6, 7, & 8 all have a form of Advisory at least 2 times per week. This means there is a block of time set aside for students to check in with teachers and a small group of peers about school, organization, social skills, and current topics.

EVLCurriculum Night for Middle School parents (via Zoom) will be:

Thursday (10/8): 5:00 - 5:45 6th; 6:00 - 6:45 7th; 7:00-7:45 8th

Attendance/Tardies/Dismissals in Middle School EVL

If your child will miss a school day or portion of a school day, please let the office know by entering the absence/tardy/dismissal into Pick Up Patrol. Mrs. Ford tells me that some features had been shut off initially, but they are turned back on. We are keeping track in the office even during EVL. Parents can still notify a teacher, but we ask that students not be the ones to notify the teacher of the absence/tardy/dismissal day. Thank you.

In Person NHS K-5

Students have adjusted very well to wearing masks indoors and maintaining a distance of 6 feet whenever possible. Our classrooms on the first floor have sinks and all classrooms have hand sanitizer stations outside the room in the hallway. We are utilizing plexiglass shields for small group instruction and in some cases right on student desks. Outdoor space is being utilized by our teachers in very creative ways. As a reminder, we are not allowing visitors to the building or the outdoor areas during the school day.

Teachers are teaching students how to use laptops or iPads and connect to either Google Classroom or See Saw (depending on the grade) so we will be ready should there be a need to teach remotely for a short period of time or a longer period of time. In order to be ready for this, we are sending home the Device Take Home Agreement for parents to sign. We will keep them on file in case we need to send devices home for instruction. This could happen in one or more classrooms if there is a positive case of Covid 19 in that classroom. We will follow the guidance provided by NHHHS should there be a need. Nurse Mara is thankful that parents have been reaching out if they have a health concern about their child. Please remember that we must follow our policies including our need to protect individual privacy. If there is a case, rest assured you will be notified. We have noticed that some children have expressed concern if they notice a classmate is out. You can reassure them that our staff and Nurse Mara will do their best to keep everyone safe and informed.  Please print and sign this form and return it to your child’s teacher by Friday, September 25th. Thank you.

Take Home Agreement
