North Hampton School

Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 2/12/21

Dear NHS Community,

Last week Dr. Hobbs and Dr. Arakelian sent a letter to parents about Trimester 3. I am attaching the letter here with a reminder that if you wish to make any changes to your child’s mode of instruction (ie. remote learning in RLA or in person) for the third trimester, you must contact Dr. Hobbs and Susan Snyder by Feb. 19th. No changes will be made after that date. A letter will be sent to middle school families regarding trimester 3 in a separate email. Thank you.

School Board Candidate Night

As you may be aware, there is a local election on March 9th. North Hampton voters will have the opportunity to vote for two School Board seats. There are four candidates for these two seats. As is NHS tradition, the middle school Student Government is sponsoring a Candidate’s Night on Feb. 17th at 6 PM, this year via Zoom. Student Government leaders will ask questions of the candidates and there will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions afterwards. All questions will be posed to all 4 candidates and each one will have a chance to answer. The meeting will be in webinar format and questions from attendees will be submitted using the question feature in zoom. Here is the link to the meeting:

Family Vacations and Quarantine

When students need to quarantine and they are absent from school, our teachers have done an outstanding job of providing work and checking in with students virtually, on average, about twice a week. If families elect to take a vacation during school days, teachers will provide some work, but may not be able to check in virtually. Students who take vacations during school time can also expect that there will be work to make up upon their return. If your family is taking a vacation during the February School Vacation week and traveling out of New England, students will need to quarantine for 10 days upon returning to New Hampshire. In some cases, the quarantine can be shortened with a negative covid test after 7 days. If you have questions, please contact Nurse Mara. If you are traveling outside of New England for the February vacation, please let us know.

Drop off and Pick Up in Car Line

We often remind students of expectations in school mid year, so here is my mid-year traffic reminder for families. With more middle school students being dropped off and picked up, I’d like to review procedures. Students may be dropped off and picked up from the PASSENGER SIDE of your vehicle only. Please adjust any carseats that may get in the way. Younger students should be ready with their coats on when you pull in, so they can quickly exit the vehicle. This helps keep traffic moving. Younger students should also be able to buckle themselves in at dismissal. If they are unable to do so, please pull your car up and stop by the greenhouse or in a parking space to assist them. Drivers should not get out of the car in the car line. Please pull as far forward as you can in the lane. This may mean your child exits the car a little further from the door of their choice, but it is necessary. Please display your sign with your child’s name and class hanging from you mirror so we can see it at dismissal time. As you know, we radio the names when you arrive to keep our dismissal orderly and as uncrowded on the sidewalk as possible. We are very appreciative of your support and consideration.

Playing in the Snow at NHS Recess

We didn’t have much snow last year, so navigating safe ways to play outdoors at NHS with snow and ice is new to me. After checking with all the teachers, we’d like to share the following expectations to support safe play during school hours:

Students should be dressed for the snow if they wish to play in the snow, ie. boots, snowpants, gloves.

Students may not throw snow or ice.

Students may build snowmen, snow sculptures, and snow forts, but not tunnels. They have been known to be unsafe due to potential for collapse.

Students may play on the field and small mounds of snow created by the plow, but the very large and icy mounds are off limits.

With their teacher’s permission, some grades may allow snow discs for sliding on special days. Please check with your child’s teacher before sending in any items. In most cases, if this is allowed, the teachers will provide the sliding discs. If sliding is allowed by the teacher, it will only take place on the small hill by the softball field. No sliding is permitted on snow and ice banks created from snow plows.
