North Hampton School

Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 9/9/21

September 9, 2021

Dear NHS Community,

We are off to a great start! It has been wonderful to see our students back at school! Teachers have been doing lots of community building activities to get to know their students and help students who don’t know each other to get to know one another better. Middle School grades have an Advisory block twice a week in small groups to support these connections. Elementary classrooms begin the day with Number Corner and other fun activities.

Drop off/Pick Up Reminders

If you use our car line, please pull as far forward towards the tent as you can and be sure to stay in the driver’s seat. Students should exit and enter your vehicle from the passenger side only for safety reasons. If you have a young child who is not able to buckle themselves in at pick up time, please pull into a parking space to get out and assist them after you pick them up in car line. Thank you!

Buses

Some of you have experienced some inconsistencies in the timing of the bus runs. We are working with First Student to improve the timing of the runs. First Student sets the routes as they have the expertise and knowledge in timing, traffic, and routes. If you have questions, we are happy to assist and you can also call First Student directly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

NH SASS Covid Testing

Parents should have received notice that North Hampton School is participating in the NH state funded Covid 19 testing program. NHS will offer testing to both staff and students on a monthly basis. Parents can sign up through Convenient MD and respond to the form that was sent earlier this month from the SAU. Please read the flyer if you are interested and contact us if you’d like to link to sign your child up.

Curriculum Night at NHS

This year, we plan to offer Curriculum NIght meetings on September 27 and 28, 2021 via zoom. The schedule and grade level times will be shared next week in a separate email. We look forward to having parents join the zoom meeting to learn about grade level competencies and expectations.

Parent Conferences

We are planning on scheduling Parent/Teacher conferences via zoom during the week of October 12, 2021. More information will follow.

Middle School Fall Sports from Mr. Guidi

Fall Sports started Wednesday, September 8th. Cross Country, Soccer and Volleyball will have practices from 3:05 to 4:05. Please make sure that you have completed and turned in the required forms (Student Athlete Contract, Parent Athletic Contract and Emergency Contact Information) before practices start on Wednesday. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at pguidi@sau21.org.

Growth Mindset and Math

At NHS, we work to instill a ‘growth mindset’ in our students about their ability to grow and learn. A ‘fixed mindset’ is one in which a person believes that their intelligence or abilities are fixed and therefore their abilities are fixed. (Ex. "I am not a math person. I am just not smart in math.") Someone with a ‘growth mindset’ believes that through effort and hard work and instructional opportunities, they have the ability to learn and that their brain has the capacity to ‘grow’ in new ways. (Ex. "I can better at multiplication if I keep practicing my facts.") We sometimes use the work of Stanford University professors Carol Dweck and Jo Boaler (math) to illustrate these concepts. They have a website called youcubed.org and have resources for teachers and parents. Here is a link for ‘at home’ resources related to a growth mindset in math. Take a look….https://www.youcubed.org/resource/youcubed-at-home/
