North Hampton School

Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 10/13/2022

October 13, 2022

Dear NHS Families,

Halloween

Students in grades K-3 are invited to bring/wear costumes to school on October 28, 2022. We will have a short Halloween parade outside. Parents/guardians are invited to view the parade outdoors behind the school at 9:00 AM. Following the parade, students will change back into their school clothes for the remainder of the day. We chose Oct. 28th because North Hampton Trick or Treat night is Oct. 30th and we guessed everyone would be done with costumes after that. As a reminder, we do not accept home baked items at school. If your child’s class is having any treats that day, please check with the teacher and be sure they come from an approved kitchen. This is due to our wellness policies. Thank you.

Trunk or Treat

PAL is sponsoring the second annual Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 21, 2022. If you’ve never hear of this, it is an opportunity for children to have a safe trick or treat experience away from traffic and streets to cross. Families reserve a spot for their car, decorate the car, and give away candy to trick or treaters in our parking lot. Children and families can also attend as trick or treaters without having a reserved space for their car for a nominal fee. The parking lot on the west side will be closed off for the event and families attending can park in the east side lot, in front of the school, or on the street. Contact PAL for details and additional information.

Author Trudy Ludwig Visited NHS

Students in grades K-5 enjoyed a visit from author Trudy Ludwig. Trudy has written 13 picture books for children. Her books tackle ideas about friendship, inclusion, respect, bullying, and even grief. Her latest book, titled, “Calling the Wind,” is about grief and loss from a child’s perspective.

Trudy told children and adults that the word “bully” is often overused or misused. She clarified with students that we don’t use the word ‘bully’ as a noun since we wouldn’t want to label a person with that name. People can grow and change their behavior. Her definition of bullying is when someone intentionally harms someone either physically or verbally, does it multiple times, despite being asked to stop, and there is a power imbalance. Not all hurtful behavior is bullying. Sometimes, people talk without thinking and say rude things. Sometimes, people are mean, but when called on the behavior, they stop and want to make up for it. In school, we address all hurtful behaviors and will continue to work to teach students when to report behavior that could be bullying. Trudy’s visit was fun and informative. She also presented to staff after school and a group of parents in the evening.

One thing she shared was the need for all of us to be skilled at identifying emotions. She shared a short facial expression quiz if you are interested. We are also attaching an order form in case any families are interested in purchasing any of her books.  Please return the form along with payment to the office by Oct. 19th. Forms submitted without payment will not be processed. Thank you.
