Dear NHS Families,
We had a wonderful assembly on Friday, Jan. 6th with Rob Surette and his “Hero Art.” Rob is an artist who is quite inspirational and includes historical figures and their stories as part of his performance. While with us, he painted 4 portraits: Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, and Albert Einstein. Students were in awe of Rob’s talent and the content of his multimedia presentation. PAL offered to purchase one of the portraits to hang in our cafeteria. We asked 8th graders to vote and they chose Martin Luther King, Jr.
I hope your child told you about this assembly, but if not, it’s not too late to ask what they thought.
Spirit Week Jan. 17-20
NHS Student Government is sponsoring a Spirit Week next week. All students are invited to participate.
Monday: No school
Tuesday: Crazy Hair/Mismatch Day
Wednesday: School Spirit Day (Wear your NHS gear or something green or yellow)
Thursday: Tropical Day (Dress code appropriate)
Friday: Pajama Day
Cold Weather Gear
Although it has been a relatively mild winter so far, students should still bring or wear items to stay warm at recess. This includes a warm jacket, hat, gloves or mittens, and boots when needed. Snow pants are recommended for play when there is snow on the ground. As a reminder, when there is snow on the ground, students are allowed to play in the snow with appropriate clothing. They are never allowed to throw snow, particularly at another student. Thanks for your support.
Technology Reminders
All NHS students are issued a device for use for school related purposes. Students in grades K-5 have iPads issued to them for use while in school. Students in grades 6-8 have a laptop issued to them for use during school hours and at home if needed. Middle school students are expected to use the protective sleeve provided to them to transport the laptop to and from school in a backpack. They are also expected to come to school with a fully charged laptop. If a charger is lost, there is a replacement fee of $79. If a laptop is damaged due to carelessness at home, in transit or liquid spill, there is a fee of $99. We are able to provide a repair at this low rate because we carry AppleCare insurance. We provide the devices for school related activities, meaning that students are not allowed to access social media on their device.
If your child brings a cell phone to school, they are expected to keep it in their backpack. Students are not permitted to have a cell phone in the classroom or use it in hallways or bathrooms. If they need to call home, we will allow them to call from a school phone or call for them. Please do not text your child while they are in class. At dismissal time, they are permitted to use their phone if they need it for dismissal arrangements.
LED Lighting Project
You may have noticed a large storage trailer and dumpster in the parking lot near the cafeteria side. We will be replacing interior lighting with more efficient LED lighting in the coming weeks. The work for this project will take place outside of school hours and will not impact the school day at all. They plan to begin next Monday on Jan. 16th and start the work upstairs.
Aladdin
Mrs. Zavez announced that Middle School students are welcome to audition for the NHS Spring production of “Aladdin.” The play is scheduled for March 23, 24, and 25, 2023.
