Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 04/17/2023

April 17, 2023

Dear NHS Families,

SAS Testing

Students in grades 3-8 take NH state tests annually in literacy and math. Additionally, students in grades 5 and 8 take a science test. Students are taught skills assessed on these tests all year long as our curriculum is aligned with state standards and competencies. Teachers in testing grades will also introduce the test format and teach students how to use the tools and features available to them with the online test format. As always, we recommend a good night’s sleep before testing days and eating a good breakfast. If students do not finish the test in the allotted time, they will be given additional time to complete the test on subsequent days.  Please see the testing schedule below and try to avoid absences on those dates if possible. If a student is absent, they will be able to take the test another day. We use the results to review our instructional practices and make any necessary adjustments. Beginning this year, parents will be able to view their child’s test results online. We will send information with instructions for accessing the scores in May.

Recess Reminders

With the nicer weather, we are seeing some students bring sports equipment to school for recess. Baseball gloves are allowed for throwing and catching with a tennis ball. Hard baseballs are not allowed for recess. Baseball bats are not permitted for recess play. Similarly, middle school students (only) may bring a lacrosse stick but also need to use a tennis ball. Hard lacrosse balls are also not allowed for recess.

The Jaggy Awards

Don’t forget to remind your child to dress up in fancy clothes for The Jaggy Awards at 8:45 AM on April 21st. We will all walk the RED CARPET (ie red paper carpet) on our way to the assembly. The RED CARPET will be set up in the front lobby and students will enter the assembly from the outside front door. (Each class will walk outdoors from the gym lobby doors to the front entry doors.) Parents are invited to come take pictures as paparazzi or “mom” -arazzi. Once the lobby is filled, we can have  additional spectators outside. There won’t be space in the cafeteria for parents but you can view from the lobby provided there is standing space available.  Since it is a K-8 assembly, we fill the room to capacity with staff and students.

Some Book Award categories this year include: Favorite Ladybug Picture Book Winner, Favorite Book Series Gr. K-1, Favorite Fiction Series Gr. 2-3, Favorite Author Gr. 3-4, Most Inspirational Book Character Gr. 6-8, and more! Many thanks to teachers Betsy McCombs and Carly Herlihy for planning and organizing this wonderful event to celebrate reading in our school community!
