Weekly Note from Ms. Snyder 2/22/2024

February 22, 2024

Dear NHS Families,

Next week is school vacation week. We hope you will enjoy time with your children and always still encourage them to read during the break! Reading for fun is a great way to pass some time without a screen.

Communication from school–please read

Please see the attached flyer to opt in for text message communication from our school. We will be trying to send text messages for notifications that are time sensitive, like when we find out a bus is running late. School messenger requires that parents opt in to receive text messages. Please see the flyer and use the QR code to opt in if you wish to receive text messages. Thank you.

9-1-1

Last week, we had a guest speaker from NH 9-1-1. He led an assembly reminding students about how and when to use 9-1-1. Did you know that you can text 9-1-1 if needed? He led a discussion after his presentation and answered questions. Another thing that came up was the 9-8-8 emergency mental health and suicide prevention hotline. This was discussed at the assembly with 5th-8th graders. Students in grades K-4 attended a separate session. Both 9-1-1 and 9-8-8 are manned 24/7 and 365 days per year. In NH, there are two 9-1-1 sites: one in Laconia and one in Concord.

SAS Testing

Each year, students in NH in grades 3-8 take state assessments called SAS. Students in grades 3-8 all take reading, writing, and math tests. Only students in grade 5 and grade 8 take a science test. Parents can access results online once results are finalized. This year, students will take the writing assessment in March and the reading and math assessments in May. Schools use the results to assess their program’s effectiveness and set goals where needed. Please see the schedule below.
