North Hampton School

Weekly note from Ms. Snyder--Jan. 23, 2025

Jan. 23, 2025

Dear North Hampton Families,

It has been a cold week, but the temperatures are starting to moderate a bit.

100th Day of School Food Drive

Each year, we collect items for Gather during the two weeks before the 100th day of school. Our first graders challenge all the grades to collect at least 100 of their assigned items. We ask Gather what they need most and they give us a list. On Friday, Jan. 24th, we will have a school gathering in which the first graders will announce which items are assigned to each grade. This is a North Hampton tradition that all the students seem to really look forward to. As the first graders pull the items from a hat, we have a drum roll right before the announcement. We will send the list of class assigned items in a separate message tomorrow. Gather is located in Portsmouth and has a pantry market. Their mission is to distribute nourishing food to people who don’t have enough to eat. Thank you.

Sugar Shack

The Sugar Shack is here. Thanks to the generous donation from PAL and fundraising efforts by our 4th grade team, we have purchased a Sugar Shack to support our Maple Sugaring unit of study in grade 4. Students tap maple trees and collect sap in a large container. Once we have enough sap, we boil it to make maple syrup. This is an exciting hands-on unit of study for our 4th graders. This is the third year for us, so you can ask any 5th or 6th grader about their experience. We are hopeful that the Sugar Shack will facilitate the boiling process and provide a shelter from the elements. The Sugar Shack is not ready to be open just yet. We purchased it from the Robert Lister Academy in Portsmouth. Our new facilities director, Dustin Marzinzik will be busy putting it back together and getting it ready for inspection in the coming days and weeks. We are excited about this addition. The Sugar Shack is located between the greenhouse and the garage. Many thanks to 4th grade teachers Linda Donohoe and Karen Haas for their hard work, dedication, and vision for a truly unique learning experience for our students.Cardiac Screening Opportunity for Gr. 5-8

North Hampton School will be partnering with an organization called “Who We Play For” to offer cardiac screenings to students in grade 5-8 on Feb. 17, 2025. (See flyer at the bottom of this email for more details.) The cost for this screening is $20. If you would like to have your child screened, but need financial assistance, please let Nurse Mara know. An electrocardiogram is painless, non-invasive, and only takes 5 minutes to complete. Each ECG will be read by a board certified pediatric cardiologist. I will send reminders about this opportunity in January. All sign ups are online through the “Who We Play For” registration portal. Many thanks to Asst. Supt. Mary Toomey and the SAU 21 school nurses for bringing this to our school.
