NHS 6th Graders Celebrate World Human Rights Day

What are human rights and why do they matter?

Monday, December 10th was the 70th anniversary of the United Nations adoption of the International Bill of Human Rights.  At North Hampton School, the 6th grade is currently working through a social studies unit focused on human rights.  As part of the curriculum, students were introduced to the International Bill of Human Rights.

The 6th grade class celebrated this important event in a number of meaningful ways.  Three students began the school day by explaining, during morning announcements, what World Human Rights Day is and by reading a portion of the 2018 U.N. World Human Rights Day proclamation.  Later, during 6th and 7/8th grade lunch blocks, groups of students participated in a public reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  This included the Preamble, all 30 articles, and the U.N. 1948 Proclamation.

Finally, a mural was created outside room 321 that highlights student research on justice and human rights.  It also includes each student's personal reflection on the unit's guiding question:  "What are human rights and why do they matter?"
