Unified Arts

Visual Art Grades 4-8

with Mrs. Zavez

At NHS in grades 4-8 we focus on advancing the creative confidence of all learners through choice and student agency.  In our choice-based art classroom, students are treated like real artists and the art room is their studio.  This approach encourages creativity and helps students develop their own unique style.  Built into the design of most lessons is the opportunity for students to work in a way that interests them personally.   Some art projects are based on a theme such as PLAY, OUT of PLACE, PRIDE or FANTASY, while others are more specific, such as, create an album cover for a new band, or make a Robot using art room materials.  Students are tasked with creating a successful artwork that reflects their personal interpretation of that theme or idea.

Choice-based art education also helps students learn important skills. For example, they learn how to plan a project, solve problems, and think critically about their work. They also learn how to manage their time and materials effectively.  These skills are not only useful in art but also in many other areas of life.

In Art Students will:

● Be able to come up with and use their own ideas for creating art.

● Understand that failure and struggles are OK.

● Know that their art doesn't need to look like anyone else's.

● Understand that experimenting with materials and techniques can lead to new ideas.

● Have the opportunity to investigate contemporary culture in their art.

● Understand that copying an idea or image is not always wrong. It can often lead to creating original art.

Pre K-3rd Grade Visual Arts Program

Mrs. Nardone

In our preschool-3rd grade art program, young artists embark on a journey of self-expression, creativity, and hands-on exploration. Through a variety of age-appropriate projects, children experiment with color, texture, shape, and form, helping to develop fine motor skills and an appreciation for the creative process. These early experiences in art not only nurture imagination and confidence but also lay the groundwork for critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration—skills that are essential in both education and future success. The art experience encourages emotional expression and the development of a growth mindset, helping children build the creativity and adaptability needed in today’s ever-evolving world.
